Biography of Dr. Peter Levine
Developer of Somatic Experiencing®
Author of "Waking the Tiger"
Dr. Levine earned a BS in Physics Engineering with minors in Mathematics and Psychology from the University of Michigan in 1964. He received two PhD’s, one, an interdisciplinary degree, from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1976 in Medical Biophysics, Neurophysiology, and Psychology, the other a degree in Psychology from International University, Los Angeles, California.
He founded and served as Director of the Somatic Experiencing Trauma Institute (now Somatic Experiencing Institute) in Boulder, Colorado, a non-profit organization offering Somatic Experiencing® certification programs worldwide. He has worked and researched in the field of trauma and its recovery for over 40 years, and taught worldwide to therapists and healers, medical doctors, and traumatologists.
He was a member of the Institute of World Affairs Task Force with “Psychologists for Social Responsibility” and served on the APA initiative for Response to Large-Scale Disaster and Ethno-Political Warfare. He has constulted with NASA, the Hopi Guidance Center, the Rolf Institute, the Hakomi Institute, and the Meadows, among others.
Dr. Levine has written numerous books including: “Waking the Tiger - Healing Trauma,” (published in twenty languages), “Healing Trauma, a Pioneering Program in Restoring the Wisdom of Our Bodies;” "Sexual Healing, Transforming the Sacred Wound,” and "In an Unspoken Voice, How the Body Releases Trauma and Restores Goodness. ” He is the co-author of “Trauma through a Child’s Eyes, Awakening the Ordinary Miracle of Healing;” and “Trauma-Proofing Your Kids, A Parent’s Guide for Instilling Confidence, Joy and Resilience.”
